For current work developments with the KCTS, please visit Stewart's Blog Otherwise, the following is a brief summary of some recent issues and work completed by the trail crew during the past months.

Many trail users have noticed the temporary closure of Centennial trail between the Rock Cut and Red Mountain Resorts, due to highway re-alignment and Caldera development of Red Mountain Resorts. This closure is likely to last into Spring 2009, when a new re-route can be established. Currently, there is a minor trail-connector between the Rock Cut and the Old Red Mountain Road.

Miners has had a major re-route with the permanent closure of the downhill part of the old trail from War Eagle Road to Museum occurring last summer. The new trail now extends all the way up to the Redhead/Dale’s Trail junction. This provides fast and efficient access to Red Summit and Redhead trails, and also makes a quality downhill in the opposite direction (climb Redhead). For those who are still wondering about the (partial) closures of Miners, Larry’s, Museum and Centre Star trails, all will be permanent closures except for Museum, which Teck Cominco hopes to open in the Fall 2008. The closures were due to unstable ground underneath and in the vicinity of mentioned trails. Teck Cominco, who has been a huge supporter of the KCTS and whose land these trails use, has found after extensive study, that mining operations of the past century have created a network of open and poorly-filled stopes underneath these trails with an unacceptable risk of cave-ins or collapse. They are therefore closed for public use and have been eliminated from the KCTS trail network. The exception to this is the Museum trail, which Teck Cominco was hoping to repair this summer/fall after expensive restoration, including a new bridge over the most hazardous area.

The most exciting news for trail users, is perhaps the recent construction of the new Red Summit trail, a spectacular climb and descent of the iconic, Red Mountain. Completed at the end of August, this latest addition to the KCTS trail network was funded by Red Mountain Resorts for public recreational use and has surprised everyone by the quality of design and trail building. The trail is simply a joy to ride, with an achievable climb to the summit , followed by a fast, flowy singletrack to Redhead, where a choice of descents takes riders to the Old Red Mountain Road. Of course, the Red Summit trail also makes an excellent hike with outstanding views through a captivating forest. If you haven’t already done so, make the effort to climb this trail as it will soon become a favorite.

Finally, Doukhobor Draw has garnered the attention of the trail crew this summer with several re-routes and a new finish. It has always been the intention of the KCTS to make the Doukhobor climbable from Paterson, as an alternative to Highway 22, and thus eliminate the steep, eroded parts of the trail. The exit onto Highway 22 has also been shifted at the junction of the old railgrade, from turning left (south) to King George Park, to turning right (west) where the Old Red Mountain railgrade makes a shorter alternative to the highway, much closer to the sawmill and alleviating much of the road climb.

July 2006

It’s been a busy summer for the KCTS trail crew. In addition to our trail manager Stewart Spooner we’re employing the equivalent of 3 full-time staff for the summer, and have an additional 3 full-time positions funded through a HRDC Job Creation Partnership.

The trail crew has completed annual maintenance on all 37 of the official trails in the network. The snowy winter produced unusually extensive windfall which had to be cleared. This year we added the Mt Roberts, Plewman, and Old Glory trails to our maintenance schedule.

In response to Teck-Cominco’s closure of some popular trails in the Red Mountain Mines area, we’ve constructed two new trails, Curly’s trail and Moe’s trail, linking Centennial trail through to Larry’s trail.

With the help of volunteers that assisted on our Trails Day, we’ve constructed Cherry Poppins trail, a new expert mountain biking trail on Cherry Ridge off Baldy Mountain.

With the logging activity now completed we’ve constructed a new lower section to Flume trail, making the classic descent rideable again.

Our next priority is re-routing the badly eroded Unecessary Ridge section of the Seven Summits trail, followed by improvement projects on the Oasis trail, the Milky Way trail, the Rubberhead trail, and the Techno-Grind trail and adding new features to the Cherry Poppins trail.
